Cluster versus POTENT Density and Velocity Fields: Cluster Biasing and Omega

چکیده

The density and velocity fields as extracted from the Abell/ACO clusters are compared to the corresponding fields recovered by the POTENT method from the Mark III peculiar velocities of galaxies. In order to minimize non-linear effects and to deal with ill-sampled regions we smooth both fields using a Gaussian window with radii ranging between 12 − 20 hMpc. The density and velocity fields within 70hMpc exhibit similarities, qualitatively consistent with gravitational instability theory and a linear biasing relation between clusters and mass. The random and systematic errors are evaluated with the help of mock catalogs. Quantitative comparisons within a volume containing ∼ 12 independent samples yield βc ≡ Ω 0.6/bc = 0.22 ± 0.08, where bc is the cluster biasing parameter at 15 hMpc. If bc ∼ 4.5, as indicated by the cluster correlation function, our result is consistent with Ω ∼ 1.

The APM cluster - galaxy cross - correlation function : Constraints on Ω and galaxy bias

We estimate the cluster-galaxy cross-correlation function (ξcg), from the APM galaxy and galaxy cluster surveys. We obtain estimates both in real space from the inversion of projected statistics and in redshift space using the galaxy and cluster redshift samples. The amplitude of ξcg is found to be almost independent of cluster richness. At large separations, r ∼> 5 h Mpc ( h = H0/100km s , whe...

Evolution of One-point Distributions from Gaussian Initial Fluctuations

We study the quasilinear evolution of the one-point probability density functions (PDFs) of the smoothed density and velocity fields in a cosmological gravitating system beginning with Gaussian initial fluctuations. Our analytic results are based on the Zel’dovich approximation and laminar flow. A numerical analysis extends the results into the multistreaming regime using the smoothed fields of...

Locally Biased Galaxy Formation and Large Scale Structure

We examine the influence of the morphology-density relation and a wide range of simple models for biased galaxy formation on statistical measures of large scale structure. We contrast the behavior of local biasing models, in which the efficiency of galaxy formation is determined by the density, geometry, or velocity dispersion of the local mass distribution, with that of non-local biasing model...

New Limits on an Intermediate Mass Black Hole in Omega Centauri: I. Hubble Space Telescope Photometry and Proper Motions

We analyze data from the Hubble Space Telescope’s Advanced Camera for Surveys of the globular cluster Omega Cen. We construct a photometric catalog of 1.2×106 stars over a 10′×10′ central field down to below BF435W = 23 (M ∼ 0.35M⊙). The 2.5to 4-year baseline between observations yields a catalog of some 10 proper motions over a smaller area, with 53,382 “high-quality” measurements in a central...

Testing the Gravitational Instability Hypothesis?

We challenge a widely accepted assumption of observational cosmology: that successful reconstruction of observed galaxy density fields from measured galaxy velocity fields (or vice versa), using the methods of gravitational instability theory, implies that the observed large-scale structures and large-scale flows were produced by the action of gravity. This assumption is false, in that there ex...
